Calculate from the underlying rating counts

For a simple mean, add the stars awarded and divide by the number of ratings. If twenty ratings total eighty stars, the mean is four. Adding five independent five-star ratings produces 105 stars across twenty-five ratings, or 4.2. That example is arithmetic, not a forecast. You cannot control what future users independently think or whether they submit a rating.

Know why a displayed average is an imperfect input

A rounded public average does not reveal the exact star total. Apple’s summary is specific to a territory, and stores may use calculation rules beyond a single lifetime mean. Treat a calculator using the displayed score as an approximation. Do not present its output as a guaranteed route to a target store rating or combine beta-community scores with production-store ratings.

Use the result to prioritize product work

If a large historical sample moves slowly, additional rating requests alone will not repair recurring complaints. Investigate the low-score themes, ship verified fixes and let real users evaluate the improved release. Keep public requests voluntary and unrewarded. The calculator’s hypothetical new ratings are a planning scenario; purchasing the required number of favorable posts is a different activity with platform and legal risks.

Keep calculator scenarios separate from forecasts

Enter the source count, current average and an explicitly hypothetical future average. The calculator illustrates a simple weighted-average scenario; it does not predict what users will submit or reproduce every store's aggregation. If you are comparing campaign periods, record the rating source, date range and audience changes as well. Never convert the result into an order for favorable stars. Use the measurement guide to define observable events and the ratings-versus-reviews guide to keep contributions from being double-counted.

Working example

Try the free calculator with twenty ratings averaging four stars and five new ratings averaging five. Then change the new average to three and compare the result. The model makes sensitivity visible without predicting sentiment. When using a rounded store average, label the answer approximate and check the relevant territory rather than claiming an exact worldwide rating.

Your next steps

  • Use exact star totals when you have them.
  • Label rounded-input results as estimates.
  • Keep territories and rating sources separate.
  • Improve the experience without purchasing favorable posts.
