Identify the audience and experience behind the score
A beta tester following a specific brief may judge a different build from a paying customer using a public release. Developers may focus on technical behavior while ordinary users focus on usefulness. Record the platform, build and task context with feedback. A small testing cohort can provide important observations, but its average does not represent every possible user or predict store performance.
Keep the reward independent of ratings
In RateMyApp, approved private reports earn testing credits. Optional community scores do not change that reward, and public store reviews are not required. Owners should use evidence criteria for report approval rather than a minimum star score. A useful report can be critical, and a community rating can remain distinct from the owner’s decision about whether the private assignment was completed.
Label public claims and product displays
If you share a community score in marketing, identify the platform, sample size and context accurately. Do not label it an App Store rating or invent an aggregate rating in structured data. Preserve permission and provenance for quoted comments. Use private research findings to decide what to improve, then let actual store users independently evaluate the released product through the supported store workflow.
What honest app ratings can tell you
Honest app ratings should leave room for criticism and clearly identify their source. On RateMyApp, optional community stars stay separate from approved private reports and public store reviews. Read the written observation before interpreting the number, and record the build and task where available. If you have four reports but only two ratings, do not describe the round as four rated experiences. A small community average can identify a question worth investigating without representing your whole audience or transferring to a store product page.
Working example
An accurate label would say ‘Optional RateMyApp community rating from this testing cohort’, with the actual count shown. It should not say ‘App Store rating’ or ‘verified worldwide user satisfaction’. If five beta participants tested one journey, describe that scope. Report findings and rating counts separately so readers can see what the evidence establishes.
Your next steps
- Label the source and sample size of each score.
- Keep beta and release-build context visible.
- Do not transfer community averages into store claims.
- Approve private work without requiring a favorable rating.
