Define value as an observable completed task
Choose a milestone such as saving a useful project, finishing a level or retrieving information later. Avoid requesting an opinion on first launch before the person has done anything. Do not show the request while a purchase, data entry or urgent task is in progress. The timing criterion should be behavior, not a required favorable answer to a satisfaction question.
Use the platform’s supported request
Store-provided review interfaces manage important parts of the experience and eligibility. Do not promise that an API call will display a dialog. Keep a persistent support route separate from the request, with no reward attached. Users should be able to decline or continue normally; a review invitation should not block access to functionality they already earned or purchased.
Test the interruption and measurement
Walk through the eligible journey on release-like builds and devices. Check where focus returns, whether unsaved work is preserved and what happens when no dialog appears. Log request attempts carefully without claiming to observe a user’s private rating submission. Compare product completion and support impact before expanding the invitation, rather than optimizing solely for more prompt calls.
Working example
For a fictional recipe app, saving a first recipe is not necessarily enough experience. Returning later, opening the saved recipe and completing the cooking checklist may be a more relevant milestone. Test whether the request arrives after the task is complete and never during an active timer. This is a planning example, not a claim about a guaranteed conversion rate.
Your next steps
- Choose a product-specific completion milestone.
- Avoid purchases, emergencies and unsaved work.
- Use platform-supported review requests.
- Measure request attempts separately from actual ratings.
