Match the audience to the question

For a crash on older devices, technical context and compatible hardware matter. For a budgeting app’s terminology, experience with the customer’s financial task may matter more. For onboarding, recruit people who have not seen the product. Write the research question first, then list the characteristics needed to answer it. Avoid treating available volunteers as a representative sample by default.

Compare reports without flattening the context

Keep device, prior familiarity and task experience with each finding. A developer may navigate through a confusing screen using conventions a new user does not know. A target user may uncover a missing real-world task the technical brief never attempted. Both observations can be useful. Separate implementation failures from comprehension or product-fit concerns so the right person can investigate each one.

Use exchanges as one recruitment channel

A developer testing exchange can add technical feedback and early device coverage, but it does not guarantee the entire customer audience is represented. Complement it with opted-in users and relevant community recruitment that follows local rules. Keep every task bounded, explain privacy expectations and use the same acceptance criteria for useful positive and negative reports. No cohort should be recruited merely to produce public praise.

Working example

Cohort example: developers attempt offline restoration on varied devices, subject users evaluate whether the app’s labels match their workflow, and fresh participants try first-run onboarding. Keep three separate conclusions rather than averaging all opinions into ‘users love it’. This fictional plan illustrates coverage choices; the actual number and composition should depend on your product and research question.

Your next steps

  • Write the decision before recruiting.
  • Record familiarity and device context.
  • Separate technical and comprehension findings.
  • Expand beyond the easiest volunteers when needed.
