Use free checks when your question is about the draft

If your next job is correcting a field that is too long, a paid research subscription is not needed to count the text. RateMyApp's free metadata checker reviews entered fields and repeated words; its image checker compares selected PNG or JPEG export properties with the chosen target. The conversion calculator works with counts you supply. These tools give you an output you can inspect without connecting a developer account. Keep relevance, translation quality and the supported product promise in a separate human review.

The public App Store keyword explorer is useful for finding a limited sample of app names and tasks to investigate. It does not measure search demand or supply live App Store ranks. Treat an interesting result as a research lead: inspect the product, record why the phrase fits yours and leave the demand field unanswered until you have an appropriate source. A tool being free does not make its output interchangeable with a commercial database. Choose the output that answers your question rather than the longest feature list.

Evaluate a paid platform with one repeatable research task

Use the provider table as a shortlist for investigation, not a ranked recommendation. Appfigures' API documentation says its rank resource covers apps and keywords tracked in the account; hourly granularity and some popularity or competitiveness metrics depend on the plan. Sensor Tower describes its offering as enterprise-level. A feature appearing on a product page does not establish your account's entitlement. Confirm the exact store, country, language context and report before committing a budget.

Prepare a small task you can repeat with each candidate: one app, one intended storefront, a handful of relevant phrases and a defined date range. Ask to see the keyword history, the meaning of an unranked result and an export you can retain. Record unavailable values instead of filling them with assumptions. Include the time needed to review the data and act on it. A subscription is useful when a named person can turn its output into a supported listing decision; buying access alone does not complete an ASO round.

Keep provider estimates separate from store observations

AppTweak's August 2026 help article says its default Volume Estimate is proprietary and distinct from the raw iOS Search Popularity value. Its API volume field changed to the estimate from August 11, while search_popularity exposes the raw value. The documented change can produce a step in derived metrics without a change in the app's performance. Preserve the metric name and methodology date when reviewing a chart across that boundary.

Apply that discipline to every provider. Ask what a score represents, how often it is refreshed and whether it is an estimate, an observed position or a count from your own console. Do not average different providers' difficulty or popularity scores into a single number merely because their scales look similar. Keep missing coverage visible. A chart can guide a hypothesis, but a provider estimate should not become a claim that your app received that many actual searches, impressions or installs.

Use the worksheet to compare the whole purchase

The downloadable CSV has prompts for coverage, metric provenance, history, limits, exports, permissions, billing terms and the person responsible for the decision. Start one copy for each candidate. Add a checked date and a source beside each answer, then mark confirmed, pending or not needed. A missing must-have is a reason to continue evaluation rather than invent a score that conceals it. There are no automatic winner points in the worksheet.

Compare like billing periods and confirm the actual price at purchase time. A monthly equivalent on an annual offer is different from a cancellable monthly payment. Check renewal, cancellation, tax, seats and what remains accessible when the plan ends. Use the access necessary for the task; ask why a store integration needs each permission before connecting it. Keep account credentials and unpublished business figures out of a worksheet shared with other evaluators. This guide intentionally avoids a static price table that could misstate a plan's current terms.

Add product feedback when your question concerns understanding

A keyword platform can help investigate discovery. A fresh participant can help investigate whether the listing promise and first useful action make sense. For a fictional lending log, ask what the person expects from the subtitle, then have them record and reopen a sample loan. A hesitation in that task suggests wording or product work; it does not establish a keyword's demand. Keep the research record and the participant's observation together while preserving their different meanings.

RateMyApp offers free ASO utilities and a separate community workflow for private app-testing reports funded with credits. It does not replace a commercial rank database. Start with the free tools if they answer your immediate question, or use the testing brief builder to prepare a specific task. Public App Store and Google Play ratings are voluntary and are not a purchased deliverable. The useful next step is the one that closes a documented evidence gap, whether that is a draft correction, a platform evaluation or a product test.

USE THIS IN YOUR NEXT ROUND

Working example

Fictional evaluation: the BorrowPage owner has one iOS app and wants to compare relevant phrases in the intended storefront. First they correct an over-length subtitle with a free checker. Then they create three worksheet copies for paid-platform candidates and request the same history and export task. One answer confirms the required export, another leaves the chosen plan's history pending, and a third requires an enterprise discussion. The owner preserves those answers and the renewal terms before deciding. No provider score, price quote, ranking gain or download result is invented for this exercise.

Your next steps

  • Write the decision and the required output before comparing tools.
  • Test the same app, storefront, phrases and period with each candidate.
  • Record metric definitions, methodology changes and missing coverage.
  • Confirm plan limits, exports, permissions and billing terms; assign an owner and next action while keeping uncertain answers pending.

Questions about this guide

What is the best ASO tool for an indie app?

Choose for the job: free field and export checks can help with a draft, while a commercial platform may help with keyword intelligence and history. Verify the intended storefront, metrics and plan limits with a repeatable task before choosing.

Are free ASO tools enough to launch?

They can support text counts, export reviews and a documented plan. They do not establish keyword demand, store approval or acquisition results. Use the relevant store console and additional evidence for the questions the free checks cannot answer.

Does this guide compare current subscription prices?

No. It compares documented workflows and provides purchase-evaluation prompts. Check the provider's current offer, billing period, seats, taxes and renewal terms before subscribing.

Is RateMyApp a replacement for AppTweak, Appfigures or Sensor Tower?

RateMyApp supplies free draft and export utilities and a separate private app-testing workflow. It does not supply an equivalent commercial keyword-ranking database. The workflows can answer different questions in the same ASO round.
