Define the deliverable before the price
For testing, a deliverable might be a documented onboarding attempt, an accessibility observation or reproducible bug steps. For a review package, it may be a public post and score. The same person can perform either task, but the agreement creates different obligations. Read the written acceptance criteria and make sure your team does not quietly add a public-review requirement later.
Assess usefulness independently of praise
A report is valuable when it explains an observation that affects a product decision. A positive sentence without context can be less useful than a detailed failure. Specify the build, intended task and evidence needed. Ask how the provider handles participants who cannot finish because of a defect. A payment system that rejects criticism undermines both the research and the credibility of subsequent claims.
Plan privacy and follow-up work
Private testing can still expose sensitive data. Supply dummy accounts where appropriate, explain which evidence may be shared and avoid collecting passwords or payment details. Budget for reproducing findings and retesting fixes. Publishing a brief does not guarantee tester availability. RateMyApp offers credits for approved private reports, with optional community ratings and no public-store-review requirement.
Working example
Sample comparison sheet: task, expected duration, supported devices, report fields, evidence permissions, acceptance criteria, dispute process and total price. Ask a provider to walk through a fictional negative report and explain whether it qualifies. If the conversation returns to guaranteed star scores, you are comparing a different deliverable from private research.
Build a private testing briefYour next steps
- Write the private deliverable explicitly.
- Accept useful negative findings.
- Use safe test accounts and evidence rules.
- Reserve time to act on the reports.
