Read the exchange agreement literally
Ask what happens if a participant finds the app unhelpful, leaves no rating or gives a low score. If they lose access or payment, the system is conditioning participation on public sentiment or posting. A friendly developer group can still create manipulation risk. Do not write mutual review promises into membership rules or use public review screenshots as completion evidence.
Structure a useful task exchange
Give each developer a concrete test brief with a start, an outcome and a reporting format. Match device and audience fit, rather than requiring every member to praise every other app. Developers can spot implementation defects but may understand navigation more easily than future customers. Treat the feedback as one research cohort and recruit target users for a separate usability round.
Keep ratings independent of approval
A private report can be approved for its evidence even when the app performs poorly. Optional community star ratings should remain distinct from store ratings and from the credit ledger. RateMyApp follows this separation in its testing workflow. Do not market exchange credits as a way to purchase App Store stars, and do not imply that community scores are imported into the store.
Working example
A useful exchange rule is: every accepted task earns the same testing reward when the participant identifies the build, attempts the brief and provides concrete observations. Public reviews are optional, independent and unrewarded. A member can find a serious defect and still complete excellent work. Keep a process for clarifying incomplete evidence without punishing criticism.
Your next steps
- Check what participants owe each other.
- Remove mutual public-review commitments.
- Match devices and tasks before assigning work.
- Explain that community and store ratings differ.
