Recruit for the question you need answered
Choose the audience before the channel. A developer can find a reproducible technical problem, while a fresh target user may reveal confusing language or assumptions. Neither group represents everyone who might eventually download the app. Explain the device requirements, approximate time and access route. If you post a recruitment message, disclose your relationship to the product and use a community that permits the request. Do not send repeated unsolicited invitations.
Ask for an outcome without teaching every tap
For an onboarding check, ask the participant to create a harmless sample and find it after restarting. Provide safe access and dummy data, but avoid explaining the complete navigation if you want to discover where someone hesitates. Ask what they expected, what actually happened and which step mattered. A blocked task can still provide useful evidence. Keep screenshots optional where possible and explain how personal information should be removed.
Give the report a clear place to go
Collect build, device, starting state, attempted steps and observed result in a private report. On RateMyApp, app owners can list a testing brief, review submitted feedback and request a focused follow-up. Community star ratings are optional and remain on RateMyApp. Availability depends on participation. Check the distribution channel's incentive rules before choosing rewards; keeping feedback private is not by itself permission for every beta arrangement.
Working example
Request example: 'I build an Android note app for people who capture ideas quickly. In the available build, create a dummy note, restart and find it. Allow ten minutes. Please report the device, build, expected result and any hesitation through the private feedback route. No public store review is required.' Replace the audience, access and time with verified details. This is an illustrative message, not consent to contact a person or a promise that testers are waiting.
Create a grading scorecardYour next steps
- Name the audience and one product question.
- Verify the available build and safe access.
- Collect observations rather than required praise.
- Respond with a decision and focused retest task.
